We asked a few questions about, and what we know about mental health care. One patient, a 45-year-old man, mentioned a previous episode of depression, anxiety, and panic attacks. He asked me to go to the hospital for an appointment and we were told he was being treated for a mental illness.
“I have had two previous mental illnesses and one of them was anxiety,” he said. “I think anxiety was the underlying cause.”
The patient asked me to go to the hospital for a call and I was given an explanation and I told him I was not going to get help for this. We had a physical exam and he was diagnosed with a major depressive disorder and anxiety disorder. His depression was severe and he was admitted to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. After a few days, we decided to move him to a mental health center. He was prescribed Seroquel and he had an appointment to see an internist for depression, anxiety, and panic attacks.
We asked the patient if he had other mental illnesses that he thought he might have, and he told me that he was not sure.
“It is very difficult,” he said. “I feel like I am crazy, and I want to be healthy.”
We talked about the importance of having a mental health professional when it comes to treating mental illness.
“If you have a major depressive disorder, anxiety, panic attacks, or thought disorders,” he said, “there is no other treatment.”
He said the doctor also has an evaluation that can help patients with other mental health conditions.
“We will have a mental health evaluation every six months. It will be done by a neurologist.”
The doctor will review his or her history and will refer the patient to a specialist for further evaluation.
If the doctor has an evaluation of his or her mental health, the patient will be referred to a psychiatric care center for further evaluation.
“If the patient has mental illness, they may have a different diagnosis. It is not easy to determine who is at the root of the problem. But we have been trained to treat mental illness and that is our goal,” the patient said.
A psychiatrist or nurse practitioner will be able to diagnose patients with mental illness from within the system and can refer them to a mental health care center for further evaluation.
“We will have an evaluation of patients and we will be trained to refer them to a psychiatrist or nurse practitioner and then a mental health care center for further evaluation,” the patient said.
